Things to Know Before Buying an Iron

There are essentially two kinds of iron boxes. One is the dry iron and the other is the steam iron. The dry iron is the classic, basic featured box, which uses only heat, to remove creases from clothes. However, the newer steam iron has proven to be faster and more effective at this task. This can further be classified as follows:-

Simple Steam – These appliances have a provision for filling in water. This water is then converted to steam and applied to the clothes when ironing; enabling creases to be removed more easily.

Steam and Spray – These irons can do simple steam ironing as well as offer a water spray mechanism for ironing tough clothes.

Steam, Spray and Shot – This type of iron releases a blast of steam on to the cloth being ironed. This is especially useful for denim clothes.

Steam Generator – These appliances generate high steam pressure, allowing both sides of the fabric to be ironed in the same glide. Thus saving plenty of time.

The first 3 kinds of irons above, can be used for domestic purposes, and the 4th (steam generator) one can be used at laundries.

One problem that steam irons have is the limescaling. Due to extensive heating of water, a layer of salts will be deposited in the steam container and outlets. This might block the steam and reduce the heating effect of the appliance. Hence, it is best to use distilled water for ironing. Then again, there are irons that come fitted with internal filters for removing the salts.

Irons can as well be classified according to sole plates. Aluminium, non-stick coated, stainless steel and ceramic plates are available. Aluminium plates were commonly used in old boxes. However, they are being replaced by the other kinds of sole plates, as they tend to get sticky after some time. The non-stick coated irons prevent this kind of sticking. Stainless steel ones, in addition to being non-sticky, offer even distribution of heat throughout the surface; however, they can get scratched very easily, especially when ironing over zippers and buttons. The ceramic irons are most ideal as they do not stick or get scratched and also offer even heat distribution.

Budget is an important factor that needs to be taken into account when buying an iron box. While the basic featured ones come at low prices, the high-end ones, with additional features for speeding up the entire chore, can be expensive.
